1898-09-05 (145lbs) Mysterious Billy Smith drew 25 Andy Walsh, Greater New York AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Recorded in The Ring Record Book as a title fight, it was contested at 145lbs and belonged to Smith’s claim at that weight. Mainly fought close quarters with both men concentrating on the body, it was no surprise that holding and hitting occurred on a regular basis. It was a tough one to handle, with even the referee getting struck at times, and while Smith was the cleverer, Walsh, whose face was badly swollen at the final bell, gave as good as he got.
