1898-09-05 (160lbs+) Dick Burge w co 1 (20) Arthur Akers, New Adelphi Theatre, The Strand, London, England. Referee: George Dunning. Made as a catchweight contest, Akers, who was reckoned to be inside 164lbs and felt that he had a reasonable claim to the English title at that weight, was soon under attack from Burge. Although the Leicester man fought back, Burge had his number and after dropping Akers twice more a right to the jaw sent the latter down to be counted out after 1.45 of the first round. Deemed to be a ‘fix’ by some, Burge remained at his natural weight despite challenging all the 160lbs men in England, while Akers, who also played rugby for Leicester, later contracted pneumonia and died on 8 October 1899.
