1898-09-05 (160lbs+) Dick Burge w co 1 (20) Arthur Akers, New Adelphi Theatre, The Strand, London, England. Referee: George Dunning. Made as a catchweight contest, Akers, who was reckoned to be inside 164lbs and felt that he had a reasonable claim to the English title at that weight, was soon under attack from Burge. Although Akers fought back, after being dropped twice more a right to the jaw sent him down to be counted out after 1.45 of the first round.
Deemed to be a ‘fix’ by some, Burge remained at his natural weight despite challenging all the 160lbs men in England, while Akers, who also played rugby for Leicester, later contracted pneumonia and died on 8 October 1899.
