1898-10-03 (136lbs) Arthur Locke w pts 20 Walter Eyles, Glengall Road Gym, Bermondsey, London, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Not given championship billing despite both men claiming the English 136lbs title, the fight was reported in the Sporting Life to have been one of the most scientific and fairly contested bouts that the author had seen. While there was no doubting that Locke (135) nearly always had the best of it, Eyles (134) put up a terrific fight and even after being on 'queer street' in the fifth he came back to floor his rival in the sixth with a right swing. Although the eighth was possibly the only round Eyles won, Locke had to fight at his best to win the decision.
Locke announced his retirement on 11 January 1899, his hands being unable to stand up to another battle in the ring.
