1898-10-07 (142lbs) Mysterious Billy Smith w pts 25 Charlie McKeever, Lenox AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. While there was no mention of it being a title clash in the New York Herald, both men were announced as being inside the championship limit of 142lbs. That being so, it obviously involved Smith’s claim at the weight. Both men showed much cleverness in blocking punches, but the one blow that McKeever found difficult to avoid was the right delivered by Smith to the kidneys when infighting. The Brooklyn Eagle reported that Smith demonstrated his right to be called the champion when controlling the fight from start to finish. Although McKeever dropped Smith in the 22nd round, unable to sustain any pressure the latter was soon back to return the compliment in the 25th as he moved on to an easy win.
