1898-10-27 (124lbs) Jabez White w rtd 12 (20) Mike Sears, New Olympic Club, Birmingham, England. Referee: George Dunning. Billed for the 124lbs title, initially White (121½) found Sears (121) to be a bit of a tartar, especially in the fourth round when the American literally showered him with punches and almost closed his left eye. Sears continued to do the forcing in the fifth, his body blows doing White no good, but with the latter coming on strong there was little between them at the end of the seventh. Thereafter, it was White who made the running. Having weakened Sears severely in the 11th, White literally threw the kitchen sink at him in the 12th before the American’s corner signalled that their man had taken enough.
