1898-11-14 (116lbs) Austin Rice drew 12 George Monroe, Horizon AC, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. Billed for the American 116lbs title, with an agreement that if the bout went the distance it would be called a draw, there was never much between the pair over 12 fast rounds and neither man deserved outright victory anyway.

Following the contest, there were immediate calls to match the pair again.
