1898-11-23 (158lbs) Tommy Ryan w rtd 8 (20) Johnny Gorman, Turn Hall, Syracuse, New York, USA. Referee: Yank Sullivan. All the New York papers reported this one as a catchweight contest, but with Gorman inside 158lbs it should be considered a defence of Ryan’s title claim at the weight. Ryan once again proved how good he was, controlling the contest against a dangerous man while waiting for the right time to strike. With jabs opening Gorman up for rights to head and body, in the eighth Ryan cut loose to drop the man from Brooklyn heavily following a terrific right-hand smash to the jaw with just three seconds of the round remaining. After Gorman’s seconds got him back to the corner, on discovering that their man had a broken rib the sponge was thrown up and the decision given to Ryan.
