1898-11-25 (142lbs) Kid Lavigne w pts 20 Tom Tracey, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jim McDonald. Reported by the San Francisco Chronicle as a 142lbs title fight, with Lavigne expected to scale 134lbs and Tracey between 138 and 140, this was a defence of the former’s Californian welter claim at the weight and surprisingly went the distance. For the opening ten rounds it was fairly even as Tracey used all of his cleverness and fleet of foot to keep out of the main firing line, but from there on in it was Lavigne’s aggression that took him to the front as his rival tired. There were no knockdowns reported, but Tracey, who had been hurt by body shots, surprisingly came back in the final two sessions to keep Lavigne guessing.
