Hawkins, who felt that Kid Lavigne could no longer make the lightweight limit and had challenged the champion to no avail, claimed the 135lbs following his win over McPartland at the weight. The fight itself saw McPartland down in the first and again in the third before being stopped by the referee after he had been sent crashing for the third time by a right to the jaw.
