1898-12-22 (122lbs) Alf Wright w rsc 15 (20) Mike Sears, New Olympic Club, Birmingham, England. Made at 122lbs, despite Wright (122) going down in the opener he was soon up before running into further trouble and being put down heavily in the fourth and fifth rounds. Sears (121½) seemed to have too much power for Wright, and in the ninth he again dropped Wright with body punches. After getting himself back into the fight, sensing that Sears was fast weakening, Wright floored the American four times in the 12th but was unable to finish it there and then. It was clear for all to see that Sears had nothing left and although he made it through the next two rounds the 15th would be his last. With his right eye closed and both hands injured Sears was almost through, and when Wright decked him when going from head to body the referee immediately called a halt. The Mirror of Life called it one of the gamest battles that had been fought for some time.
Regardless of the fact that there was no title billing as such, Wright strengthened his claim at the weight on winning.
