1898-12-23 (158lbs) [[Tommy Ryan]] w rsc 14 (25) [[Dick O’Brien]], Charter Oak AC, The Coliseum, Hartford, Connecticut, USA. With Ryan weighing 148lbs to O’Brien’s 158, this should be classed as a defence of the former’s title claim at the weight. O’Brien proved to be as durable as they come and a tough nut to fully subdue, taking Ryan close on 14 rounds before he was able to drop his opponent after giving him a shellacking for most of the fight. Badly cut around the eyes from the fourth onwards, O’Brien was eventually stopped in the 14th after Ryan had smashed him to the canvas three times, the final knockdown bringing the police into the ring and forcing the referee to call it off.
