1898-12-27 (135/137lbs) [[Joe Gans]] w pts 20 [[Jack Daly]], Lenox AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. Matched to decide the best man after [[Kid Lavigne]], Gans, inside 135lbs, took over Daly’s 135/137lbs claims following a clear points win over the latter. In what was a poor fight to watch, Gans was far too clever for Daly, blocking his leads and sending in straight lefts of his own, but boxed in a negative defensive fashion for much of the time. The only knockdown came in the second round when Gans put Daly down from a right swing to the jaw.
