1899-01-16 (138lbs) Eddie Connolly drew 20 Spike Sullivan, Pastime AC, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. Referee: John Sheehan. Made at 138lbs, it was a vicious fight that saw Connolly having the best of it early on before being severely punished towards the end. Sullivan, who was nearly out several times, showed great recuperative powers to keep going.

Connolly, who complained bitterly at the decision, was now claiming the title at the weight, while Sullivan, a natural at 133lbs, dropped back down the weight class.
