1899-02-06 (126lbs) Ted Marlow w pts 20 Tom Ireland, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Although not reported as such this fight was regarded as involving the English 126lbs title, with both men's claims at stake. By the end of the fifth round it looked to be just a matter of time as Ireland had slipped down in the first, been dropped in the fourth and twice more in the fifth, with Marlow well in front. However, in the eighth Ireland began his comeback, and by the 16th when he dropped down to avoid punishment he was still behind but had made up a lot of the deficit. The Sporting Life report gave Marlow the last three rounds with Ireland twice receiving cautions for holding, but at the final bell despite all that had gone before there were still many who thought the latter had won.
This was Marlow’s first appearance at the NSC since he had been banned for his display against Jack Roberts, but instead of using the win as a springboard for further opportunities there appear to be no more big fights for him.
