1899-02-22 (124lbs) Jack Gibson w co 6 (20) Bill Brierley, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Made at 124lbs, with a height-and-reach advantage over Brierley (124), along with added power, Gibson (123½) virtually had his man beaten in the opening session, having knocked him down with a left-right to the jaw. Floored three times in the third round and going to ground repeatedly in the fifth, Brierley was put down in the sixth by a heavy right to the chin to be counted out.

Although there was no title billing, Brierley lost any semblance of claim he had to the English 124lbs championship on being beaten.
