Line 1: Line 1:
1899-02-27 (130lbs) [[Jack Roberts]] w pts 20 [[Frank Guest]], NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Although there was no billing as such, it was made at 130lbs and was certainly contested under English championship conditions. Taller than his opponent and starting as he meant to continue, Guest immediately countered Roberts’ early rushes with solid left leads to the head before eventually being crowded out. By the tenth round Roberts was travelling at pace and had crept ahead, and although there was never much between them he was the one setting the pace. Almost as strong as when he started, Roberts finally brought the game Guest down in the 19th and while he was unable to repeat the treatment again there was no disputing the verdict in his favour.
