1899-03-13 (140lbs) Jim Holloway w disq 13 (20) Jim Curran, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Made at 140lbs with Holloway’s slender Imperial British Empire claim at risk, it was extremely dull for the first five rounds as Curran found it difficult to cope with the South African’s bulldog rushes. Due to that there was plenty of holding and in the ninth the referee was heard to say: “I have already cautioned you twice, do not trifle with me”. In the tenth Curran was cautioned three more times for holding and in the 13th the referee had seen enough, disqualifying the latter for persistently ignoring his instructions.

It was clear that Curran’s heart was no longer in the sport and within a couple of weeks he announced his retirement from boxing to concentrate on running his pub.
