1899-04-03 (122lbs) Nat Smith w pts 15 Alf Wright, Oxford Street Gymnastic Club, Manchester, England. Referee: Edward Humphreys. Billed for the English 122lbs championship, and reported in the Sporting Life as being one of the best fights ever seen in the north of England, both Smith and Wright gave it their all. While Smith, excellent at range, favoured his left, Wright was more than happy to mix things up while never leaving his man alone if he could help it. In the eighth round Wright was dropped heavily by a right to the jaw, but he was quickly back into the fray and despite Smith being ahead he continued to make the latter work hard. Three times Wright was put down in the 13th, but although really groggy he lasted out the session before coming back strongly in an effort to turn things around. It was a magnificent failure by Wright, both men receiving tremendous applause for their efforts following the final bell.
