1899-04-15 (118lbs) Johnny Ritchie w rsc 10 (15) Patsy Haley, Robinson’s Opera House, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Referee: John Murphy. Made at 118lbs, in the early stages of the contest Haley outclassed Ritchie, having knocked him down with a right to the jaw in the opener, and prior to the eighth it looked as though he was a sure bet to take the decision, such had been his ability to score with the jab while making his man miss. Ritchie had not landed a worthwhile punch up until the eighth, but after breaking through the tiring Haley’s guard and raining punches in on him from both hands the fight was turned on its head. Towards the end of the ninth, Ritchie smashed in a terrific blow under Haley’s heart that saw the latter go to his corner at the sound of the bell in some distress. Ritchie went for the finish in the tenth and after being dropped on to the lower strand by a right to the jaw and getting up at ‘nine’, Haley was immediately put down again, whereupon the referee stopped the contest.

On winning, Ritchie took over Haley’s American title claim at the weight.
