1899-04-24 (136lbs) Walter Eyles w pts 20 Joe Francis, Brock Street Hall, Bath, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Made at 136lbs, this was a defence of Eyles’ claim despite the lack of billing, and in Francis he met a man who would make life difficult for him without threatening to win. Prior to the ninth round Eyles had put himself in the driving seat, hurting Francis with solid lefts to the body. He then had Francis over from a left to the jaw in that session. In the 16th Eyles again floored Francis with a left to the face before continuing in the same vein to run out a good winner.

Eyles was not really heard from again at the weight, leaving both Tom Causer and Jim Curran with much stronger claims at that moment in time.
