1899-05-01 (154lbs) Dido Plumb w co 9 (15) Bill Heffernan, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J.H.Douglas. Billed for English, Imperial British Empire and world (in some reports) 154lbs titles, Plumb (152) eventually asserted his superiority over the tough Heffernan (151) by the eighth round despite having been sent to his knees in the third and being hurt on several occasions. Ultimately, it was Plumb’s ability to effectively counter the onrushing Heffernan that turned the fight his way. Coming out for the ninth, with Heffernan forcing, Plumb finally got to his man with left-rights to put him down, and when the Colonial managed to get to his feet he was quickly sent to the floor again to be counted out.
Around this time, Tom Woodley, who was more at home when weighing around the 144lbs mark, challenged all England at 150lbs. However, it would be two or three years before he settled into that weight.
