1899-05-08 (116lbs) Sailor Richardson w co 9 (20) Joe Barrett, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Made at 116lbs, both men started as though they meant business but immediately it could be seen that Barrett’s blows lacked the power of his rival. In the fourth round Richardson (114) smashed Barrett (115) to the floor with a right to the jaw and although the latter got to his feet he was the receiver-general from thereon. Having taken a steady battering, by the ninth Barrett was virtually all in and after a left swing to the mark dropped him he was counted out while calling for a foul to be given.

Regardless of the fact that there was no title billing attached, Richardson would have taken over Barrett’s 115lbs title claim on the result but failed to capitalise on it.
