1899-05-08 (116lbs) Sailor Richardson w co 9 (20) Joe Barrett, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Made at 116lbs, although both men started as though they meant business it could quickly be seen that Barrett’s blows lacked the power of his rival. In the fourth round Richardson (114) smashed Barrett (115) to the floor with a right to the jaw, and although the latter got to his feet he was the receiver-general thereafter. Having taken a steady battering, by the ninth Barrett was virtually all in. With Richardson sensing that the end was in sight, after a left swing to the mark dropped Barrett he was counted out while calling for a foul to be given.

Regardless of the fact that there was no title billing attached, Richardson would have taken over Barrett’s 115lbs title claim on the result but failed to capitalize on it.
