1899-05-17 (126lbs) Tommy White w pts 20 Colorado Jack Dempsey, Rovers’ Wheel Club, Denver, Colorado, USA. Referee: George Jordan. Made at 126lbs, White’s title claim at the weight was automatically on the line and he retained it despite breaking his left hand on Dempsey’s head in the tenth round. Prior to that, White had Dempsey groggy at times but the latter showed great endurance to fight his way out of trouble. While there was no doubt that White was suffering after the injury to his hand he did not let it affect his work rate and from the 12th onwards he often landed at will, Dempsey showing great spirit to stay with him.
