1899-06-09 (112lbs) [[Clarence Forbes]] w pts 12 [[Casper Leon]], West End Club, St Louis, Missouri, USA. Referee: Joe Stewart. Billed for the American 112lbs title, despite both men being announced as inside the weight the 17-year-old Forbes appeared to be several pounds heavier than Leon. Starting fast, it was Forbes who took the early initiative as he sidestepped many of Leon’s rushes and slammed in solid lefts and rights to the head. He also showed a dangerous uppercut at times. Although Leon was always in the fight he was not winning it at the halfway stage, relying too much on his left jab, even when out of distance. Thereafter, however, Leon made a better fist of it, and he shared most of the rounds before coming on strong in the 12th when having Forbes badly dazed following a terrific right to the jaw. It was not enough though for the referee who gave his vote to Forbes.
