1899-07-03 (135lbs) Frank Erne w pts 20 Kid Lavigne, Hawthorne AC, Buffalo, New York, USA. Referee: John Kelly. Although reported by the New York Herald and Chicago Tribune to have been made at 133lbs, the Buffalo Courier stated that the scales were set at 135lbs with both men inside. Defending his title Lavigne (135) more than held his own during the first six rounds, but in the seventh he took a battering and was only saved from a knockout by the bell. It later transpired that Erne (133½) had badly damaged his left hand in that session and although he controlled the fight from thereon, handing out plenty of punishment, he was unable to knock Lavigne down.
