1899-07-31 (138lbs) Matty Matthews w pts 25 Eddie Connolly, Coney Island AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: George Edwards. Made at 138lbs, this was a spirited battle all the way, with Matthews fighting coolly and cleverly and Connolly showing himself to be a poor judge of distance as he missed with many of his swings. Following his victory, Matthews was recognised by many as the best man at the weight in America.
