1899-08-29 (165lbs) Joe Choynski w pts 20 Australian Jim Ryan, Athletic Club, Dubuque, Iowa, USA. Referee: George Siler. Advertised as a 165lbs world title fight, the clever Choynski (158) soon got the measure of Ryan (162) and pushed ahead in virtually every round from the mid-point onwards as the latter got more and more ragged. Having campaigned among the heavyweights, Choynski was also very strong at the weight and mixed his punches up well, staggering Ryan on several occasions. The last third of the contest was all one way as Choynski continued to outbox the Australian and the decision in his favour was a formality. There were no knockdowns.
