1899-08-31 (152lbs) Tommy Ryan w pts 20 Jack Moffat, The Auditorium, Dubuque, Iowa, USA. Referee: George Siler. Billed as a welterweight title defence for Ryan, according to the Chicago Tribune, it was effectively Ryan's middleweight claim that was at stake here. After 20 rounds of fast fighting the decision went to Ryan (152), who was given more punishment than he would normally take and hurt his right hand in the 17th, which did not really wear. There were no knockdowns, but Moffat (152) gave Ryan all the trouble he could handle and the champion had to change tactics several times to avert a defeat.
