12 September (116lbs) Terry McGovern w rsc 1 (25) Pedlar Palmer, Westchester AC, Tuckahoe, New York, USA. Referee: George Siler. Made at 116lbs, the men first weighed in safely inside the limit but, after the fight had been postponed a day, Palmer refused to weigh in again when known to be at least 120lbs. However, prepared to allow the fight to go ahead at catchweights, McGovern actually took over Palmer’s title claim by default when demolishing the Englishman. Right from the opening bell, McGovern took up the offensive and soon knocked Palmer down for ‘five’ with a left hook. After a right uppercut, followed by a left hook and another right had sent Palmer crashing to the boards again, the referee picked up the count before calling it off. From thereon, McGovern would fight at 118lbs.
