1899-09-12 (116lbs) Terry McGovern w rsc 1 (25) Pedlar Palmer, Westchester AC, Tuckahoe, New York, USA. Referee: George Siler. Made at 116lbs. With both men having already weighed safely inside the limit, after the fight had been postponed a day Palmer refused to weigh in again when known to be at least 120lbs. However, prepared to allow the fight to go ahead at catchweights, McGovern actually took over Palmer’s title claim by default before demolishing the Englishman. Right from the opening bell, McGovern took up the offensive, knocking Palmer down for ‘five’ with a left hook. After a right uppercut that was followed by a left hook and another right had sent Palmer crashing to the boards again, the referee picked up the count before calling it off.

Subsequently, McGovern would fight at 118lbs.
