1899-10-12 (135lbs) Spike Sullivan w co 6 (25) Jimmy Murray, Hercules AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. Articled at 135lbs, Sullivan successfully held on to his title claim at the weight when knocking Murray out with a left to the jaw at 2.22 of the sixth. Murray was down once in the second round, twice in the fifth and twice more in the sixth before the finishing blow. On 4 November, Sullivan was booked to meet Joe Youngs at the Greenwood AC, Brooklyn at 135lbs. Although it is unclear as to whether Youngs was able to make the weight or not he was knocked out in the latter stages of the 20th and final round. It had been a hard fought contest in which Sullivan was made to fight all the way by an unyielding opponent.
