1899-10-30 (98lbs) Frank Morcombe w pts 20 Dido Vardy, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England
30 October (98lbs) Frank Morcombe w pts 20 Dido Vardy, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. In a fight given English title billing at 98lbs, Morcombe (97¾) soon built up a handsome lead over Vardy (97½) by dint of good left-hand work and solid rights to head and body. Having continued to go well, in the 14th Morcombe dropped Vardy with a left hook and although the latter was quickly back in the fray it seemed to be just a matter of time that the Londoner would finish matters. Surprisingly though, Morcombe, weakened in the 16th by Vardy’s body attacks, was twice dropped before pulling himself together and going on the take the points decision.
On 11 December, Vardy outpointed Morcombe over 20 rounds at the same venue in a fight that had been articled for the English 98lbs title. The contest cannot be considered as involving any title claim as it eventually took place at catchweights after neither Vardy (101½) or Morcombe (100½) were able to make the required weight. While on the subject of the 98lbs title, Frank Exall outpointed Albert Mortimer over three rounds to win a championship belt competition at the St George’s Hall, Lambeth, London on 5 February 1900.
