1899-12-04 (133/135lbs) Frank Erne drew 25 New York Jack O’Brien, Coney Island AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: George Siler. Reported to be a 133lbs defence of the title that Erne had won at 135lbs, the referee came in for some criticism having earlier said that it was impossible for two men contesting a 25 round fight ending up with the same amount of points. O’Brien forced the fight from the beginning and at several stages had Erne in some distress, including two knockdowns, and had the referee followed his own statement to the letter the New Yorker would have won. Erne was the cleverer, his left jab closing both of O’Brien’s eyes by the finish, but he seemed to be content to just counter and never chased the fight for whatever reason.
