1899-12-07 (124lbs) Joe Bernstein w pts 25 Tony Moran, Hercules AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Although both were inside 122lbs this was effectively a defence of Bernstein’s 124lbs title claim, and he always looked to be Moran’s master despite the latter going quite well on occasion. Several times during the contest Bernstein appeared to have Moran at his mercy but was unable to find a finishing blow. It transpired afterwards that Bernstein had damaged his left hand early on.
On 16 December, Bernstein drew over 20 rounds with Billy Barrett at the Greenwood AC, Brooklyn. With the contest made at catchweights it was unclear whether Bernstein’s 124lbs American title claim up for grabs in this one, especially as Barrett normally fought at higher weights. There was nothing in the Brooklyn Eagle other than the fact that Barrett fought a clever fight, it being a great surprise to the majority of onlookers who felt he would buckle under the weight of Bernstein’s heavy punches.
