1900-01-09 (118lbs) Terry McGovern w rtd 8 (25) George Dixon, Coney Island AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Johnny White. Reported as being a title fight at 118lbs with both McGovern and Dixon announced as weighing 116½lbs, it was a known fact that both men were heavier. Knocked down five times in the eighth, Dixon’s corner threw the sponge in after body blows had worn him down and he had received a broken nose in the seventh. Following the result, all of Dixon’s various claims from 118 to 128lbs would have passed to McGovern. In England, Joe Barrett won a 118lbs championship contest when he forced Fred Delaney to retire after two rounds at the New Goodwin Club, Shoreditch, London on 21 February.
