1900-02-17 (130lbs) Art Simms w disq 4 (20) Loudon Campbell, Athletic Club, Niles, Ohio, USA. Referee: Johnny Lavack. Made at 130lbs, the Warren Daily Chronicle reported that Campbell completely outclassed Simms in virtually every facet of the game before flattening him with a big right to the jaw in the fourth. Most people in attendance thought Simms had been counted out prior to being carried to his corner, but following claims from his seconds that he had been thrown the referee decided to disqualify Campbell. The decision was treated with astonishment as Simms had been clinging to Campbell for dear life when pushed away and was to all intents and purposes finished for the night.

How Simms had the nerve to take over Campbell’s American title claim at the weight on his victory one will never know.

Due to defend his title claim against Frank Stackhouse (w co13 on 16 October at the Cadilac AC, Detroit, Michigan), it became just another fight when his opponent weighed in at 130¾lbs.
