1900-03-12 (145lbs) Mysterious Billy Smith drew 25 Young Mahoney, Hercules AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Joe Ward. With Smith still claiming the American 145lbs title despite his loss at the weight to Rube Ferns, the New York Herald reported this to be a 145lbs title defence by him. Proving a surprise package, Mahoney would surely have won if he could have punched harder and gone forward a bit more, but as it was he made life miserable for Smith with his clever blocking, feinting tactics and countering straight lefts. Although Smith made the running he could rarely find a way through and was often outscored at the rate of two to one. It was clear in the aftermath that Smith got a share of the decision purely because of his aggression.
