1900-03-19 (140lbs) Matty Matthews w rsc 14 (25) Eddie Connolly, Hercules AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. Recognised as a contest for the American 140lbs title that Matthews was claiming, the referee stopped the contest in the 14th to save Connolly, who had been ill with the grip only days earlier. Fiercely contested for the opening nine rounds, with Connolly the cleverer man, after that the latter’s lack of fitness told and between the 12th and 13th Matthews forced his rival back without being able to put him down. In the 14th, having been cracked on the jaw at least a dozen times without falling, Connolly was finally rescued.
