1900-03-23 (133lbs) Frank Erne w rtd 12 (25) Joe Gans, Broadway AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. Billed for the world 133lbs title, in what had been an evenly fought contest Erne (131) clinched his victory when Gans (133) was so badly cut in the 12th he had to retire from the fight.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Gans’ eye was started from its socket, which was supported by evidence from Arne Steinberg of Maryland who, years later, interviewed Eubie Blake, the pianist at Gans’ Goldfield hotel, and Eddie Meyers, the son of Gans’ partner in the hotel. They confirmed that the injury was so horrendous that Gans, whose eye was actually hanging on his face, had no choice but to retire from the fight or face permanent blindness.
