1900-03-26 (140lbs) Matty Matthews w co 2 (20) Owen Ziegler, Athletic Club, Niles, Ohio, USA. Thought to have involved Matthews’ American title claim at 140lbs, despite the Youngstown Vindicator reporting him to be the 138lbs champion, the article went on to say that Matthews was willing to concede four pounds to either Mysterious Billy Smith or Charley McKeever in order to decide the 142lbs championship. The fight itself saw Ziegler down in the first round before a tremendous left hook to the jaw led him to being counted out at 1.10 of the second.
