Made at 124lbs, Gardner, who brought a badly damaged right hand into the fight, kept his claim alive at the weight on winning. After dropping Broad for ‘nine’ in the first, Gardner fought exclusively with the left from then on. Although Broad had been warned for butting in the 13th, in the 14th he put Gardner down with a straight left and as the latter got up he rushed in head first, inflicting terrible facial damage, for which he was immediately disqualified.
