1900-05-24 (145lbs) [[Rube Ferns]] w co 1 (20) [[Jack Bennett]], Crescent AC, Mutual Street Rink, Toronto, Canada. Referee: Jack Sheehan. Calling himself the welter champion after beating [[Mysterious Billy Smith]] at 145lbs, Ferns defended his claim against Bennett at 142lbs in a fight billed for the title. There was very little fighting done for the first couple of minutes due to each man sizing the other up but after both came together and were told to break by the referee Bennett stepped back, dropping his hands to his sides, while Ferns jumped in and smashed in a solid right to the head, followed by a left hook to the jaw to drop his rival. With Bennett stretched out on the canvas and counted out after just two minutes and 20 seconds, Ferns later said that he did not step back on being asked to break as he was not obliged to do so according to the agreement.
