1900-05-28 (114lbs) Pedlar Palmer w pts 15 Harry Ware, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the English and world 114lb titles, Ware (113), who had decided to rush Palmer (113) while roughing him up at the same time, continued in that vein until he was cautioned by the referee for the final time in the eighth round. From that point on Palmer scored more freely, and while Ware continued to rush him he was having less success. In the 14th both men slipped to their knees due to Ware’s actions. Although it was extremely close Palmer got the verdict, in part due to his opponent consistently ignoring the referee’s instructions.
By June, Palmer, who was struggling with his weight, was challenging the world at 118lbs while Andrew Tokell challenged Ware to decide the 114lbs title between them on 20 November. A few weeks later Ware was challenged by America’s Danny Dougherty to decide the world title.
