1900-06-05 (140lbs) Eddie Connolly w pts 25 Matty Matthews, Seaside AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Billy Madden. Although a billed 142lbs welterweight title fight, with both men inside 140lbs the Canadian also looking to take over Matthews’ claim at that weight as well. In four meetings between the pair Connolly had failed to win, but this time he got away well and was never headed. While Matthews appeared to have left his fight at home, Connolly found his face repeatedly with slashing left swings and scored three knockdowns, in the 11th, 18th and 25th rounds, that made the referee’s decision easy.
