27 June (98lbs) Joe Williams w co 13 (20) Frank Exall, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Billed as being for the English 98lbs title, with Williams shown as the holder, it was reckoned to be one of the fiercest battles ever seen in the North up to that time. Fast and furious, Exall was down in the second before having Williams over in the third, a claim of it being a foul blow was dismissed. From thereon Williams, continuing to lead, had the best of it and having badly weakened Exall in the 12th the latter was knocked out by a cracking right to the jaw in the following session. Despite challenging the world at the weight, Williams soon moved on.
