1900-08-02 (134lbs) Tom Ireland w rtd 2 (15) Jack Goldswain, Wonderland, Mile End, London, England. Referee: Eddie Humphreys. Billed for the English 134lbs title (even being reported as 132lbs), and contested over three-minute rounds, Ireland (131½) was right up for it, viciously attacking Goldswain (132) from the opening bell before having his man over at the gong. The second session saw Ireland concentrating on the body with Goldswain clinching to avoid punishment, but from an ensuing melee the latter fell badly, injuring an arm, and was retired at the end of the round.
Ireland, who was virtually at the end of a long career, never defended his claims despite being challenged at 132lbs by Bill Chester, Jabez White, Harry Greenfield and George Cunningham (the winner of a championship competition when outpointing Bill Nolan over six rounds at Wonderland on 6 December).
