1900-10-16 (142lbs) [[Matty Matthews]] w pts 15 [[Rube Ferns]], Light Guard Armory, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Referee: George Siler. Although billed for the 142lbs welterweight title, with the men inside 140lbs (as far as the ''Toledo Bee'' was concerned) on the afternoon of the fight Matthews regained both titles on winning. According to the ''Detroit Free Press'', however, both men weighed in at 141½lbs on the afternoon of the contest. Despite Ferns coming into the fight handicapped by an injury to his left shoulder, Matthews, who did the lion’s share of the leading, still had to work hard to secure victory as the former proved to be a difficult obstacle to overcome.
