1900-10-16 (142lbs) Matty Matthews w pts 15 Rube Ferns, Light Guard Armory, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Referee: George Siler. Although billed for the 142lbs welterweight title, with the men inside 140lbs (according to the Toledo Bee) on the afternoon of the fight Matthews regained both titles on winning. Although Ferns came into the fight handicapped by an injury to his left shoulder, Matthews, who did the lion’s share of the leading, still had to work hard to secure victory as the former proved to be a difficult obstacle to overcome.
